Chubbie Cubbie's Valentine Activities
Activity name:

Wrapping Paper
Materials needed:
Large pieces of either newsprint,
craft, or butcher paper
Paint in shades of red, pink, and white
Paper plates
Heart-shaped doilies
Preparation:
Put some paint onto paper plates.
You may wish to cover your work surface with newspaper.
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children dip a
heart-shaped doily into the paint. Then, have them press it
onto the paper and peel off.
Repeat as long as you like or until the paper is
covered. You will need several doilies for each sheet of wrapping
paper you create.
Variation ~
Instead of dipping the doilies into the paint, you can place them on the
paper and then use a paintbrush to dab paint onto and around the doily to
make the "lacey" impression.

Mini Heart Puzzle Match
Materials needed:
Preparation:
Print mini heart puzzles. Cut out
hearts. Mount on cardboard or poster board. Laminate.
Cut puzzles into two pieces using line indicated in middle of heart.
Carrying out the
activity:
Lay out the puzzle pieces. Have the
children put together the mini puzzles.
Variations -
Alphabet Match-
Add matching to the puzzles such as capital letters on
one side and lower case on the other.
Number Match-
Put a number on one side with pictures or circles on the
other side in a quantity that matches the number.
Spelling -
Use for spelling by placing the first letter of a word on
one one side and then place endings on the other side. Make several
copies of the same heart so they can make interchangeable words.

Patchwork Heart (classroom project)
Materials needed:
Black felt pen
White poster boards
Tape
Crayons, paint, markers, or colored pencils
Preparation:
Cut out a large heart from
white poster board. Cut the large heart into pieces so that each child in
the class has one piece. Label each piece with a child's name and give
them their piece.
Carrying out the
activity:
Have each child draw decorate
their section anyway they like. Have the children reconstruct the heart
and glue it onto a large piece of paper or another piece of poster board.
Display for all to see.

I Love You Mural (classroom project)
Materials needed:
White construction paper
Scissors
Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
Preparation:
Cut large heart shapes from the construction
paper. Give each child a plain white paper heart.
Carrying out the
activity:
Ask them to draw the
people they love on the heart. Arrange individual hearts to form one large
heart and display on a wall or bulletin board.

Heart-O-Hands (classroom project)
Materials needed:
Red, white, and pink construction paper
Scissors
Tape, glue, or staples
Large sheet of butcher's paper (or equivalent) or large bulletin board
Preparation:
Trace each child's right hand
onto red, white, and pink construction paper.
Carrying out the
activity:
Cut out hands and arrange
into a large heart shape (slightly overlapping the hands). Be sure to
alternate colors (red, white, pink, red, white, etc.). Glue onto large
paper or attach to bulletin board.

Magic Hearts
Materials needed:
Red, dark pink, and/or dark purple tissue
paper
White construction paper
White vinegar
Paintbrush
Scissors
Preparation:
Cut heart shapes from tissue
paper.
Carrying out the
activity:
Brush white construction
paper with white vinegar. Place tissue paper hearts onto the construction
paper. As vinegar dries, the hearts with fall off and leave heart prints.

Heart Fold-Overs (a new twist on an old idea)
Materials needed:
White paper (construction or copier)
Paint in shades of red, pink, purple, and blue
Paintbrushes
Scissors
Small bowls or paper plates
Preparation:
Cut out hearts from white
paper. Fold in half and then reopen. Put paint in small bowls or on paper
plates.
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children dab paint
in the center of their heart. Re-fold the hearts and flatten the heart so
that the paint is forced toward the outside edges. Re-open and allow to
dry.
