Chubbie Cubbie's Activities for the Olympics

Activity name:
Paper Olympic Flag

Materials needed:
Piece of white construction paper
Blue, yellow, black, green, & red construction paper
Scissors
Glue or glue stick

Preparation:

Cut out 3" circles in blue, yellow, black, green, and red.  Click here for a circle stencil you can print.

Carrying out the activity:
Have children glue the circles onto a piece of white construction paper to form the flag as shown above.  For older children, cut across one side of each ring and have the children try weaving them together as they glue them to their paper so they are interlocked.

Activity name:
Pipe Cleaner Olympic Flag

Materials needed:
Piece of white construction paper
Red, yellow, black, green, and red pipe cleaners
White glue

Preparation:
None.

Carrying out the activity:
Have the children bend their red pipe cleaner into a circle and then twist the ends around the circle so if forms a ring.   Then, have them make a ring from the yellow, but before twisting it closed, have them loop it through the red ring.  Continue until all rings are connected like the picture above (in activity one).

Glue the rings onto white construction paper using white glue.

Activity name:
Olympic Medals

Materials needed:
Ribbon
Cardboard
Glitter in gold, silver, and copper (bronze) [you can mix gold and red together to get a close effect if you can't find a copper color]
Gold, silver, and copper (bronze) paint (If you don't have the metallic paints, you can use similar colors of regular paint)
White glue

Preparation:
Cut out three cardboard circles about 3" in size.  Punch a hole in the top of the circle for a place to later thread the ribbon through.

Carrying out the activity:
Paint the circles with the paint.  One in each color.  Paint on some white glue and add the coordinating color of glitter.

Allow to dry and then attach the ribbon stringing it through the hole in the medal.

Play some "Olympic" Games.  Award the medals to the winners.  Or you can just use this as a craft project.
