New Year's Activities
Activity name:
Candy Poppers (little surprises you can make
for the children)
Materials needed:
Toilet tissue tube
Individually wrapped candies small enough to fit inside (take children's
ages into consideration when choosing candies)
Tissue paper
Scissors
Ribbon cut into two 6" pieces.
Preparation:
Cut toilet paper tube in half. Cut a piece of tissue paper that is
approximately 5" longer than the tube and wide enough to wrap around about
twice.
Carrying out the
activity:
Place both halves of the tube onto one end of the tissue paper. Wrap
the tube halves in the tissue paper. Tie one end closed with the a
piece of ribbon. Put the candies into the tube. Do not over
fill. Tie the second end with the other piece of ribbon.
Give a popper to each child. Show them how to
break it open (break in middle where two halves meet) and find their
surprise inside.

Paper Plate Shakers
Materials needed:
White non-coated paper plates (any size)
Dried beans, corn, or rice (or a combination)
Crayons, markers, colored pencils, and/or paint
Stapler
Tape or glue (optional)
Colored paper streamers (optional)
Preparation:
None
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children decorate the outside (underside) of two paper plates.
Place a handful of dried beans, rice, and/or corn in one plate. Place
other plate on top of first plate (be sure that the decorated side of the
plate is facing out) and staple together. For added safety, cover staples
with tape or glue. Streamers can be added to the sides of the finished
shaker if desired.

Tube Shakers
Materials needed:
Paper towel tubes --preferably white
Crayons, markers, colored pencils, and/or paint
Dried beans, corn, or rice (or a combination)
Stapler
Tape or glue (optional)
Preparation:
None
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children decorate a paper towel tube. Fold over one end and
staple closed. Fill 1/3 full with dried beans, rice, and/or corn. Fold
over second end and staple closed. For added safety, cover staples with
tape or glue.

Kazoo Noise Makers
Materials needed:
Paper towel tubes --preferably white
Crayons, markers, colored pencils, and/or paint
Scissors
Wax paper
Masking tape
Preparation:
None
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children decorate a toilet paper tube. Cut out a circular piece
of wax paper about 1 inch larger than the diameter of the tube opening.
Place wax paper circle over one end of the tube and secure with tape.
Demonstrate to children how to make a humming noise through the open end
of the tube to make a kazoo sound.
