Chubbie Cubbie's Activities for Fall
Activity name:
3-D Leaves
Materials needed:
Construction paper (green or a fall color)
White glue
Scissors
Preparation:
Cut out large leaves from construction paper.
Carrying out the
activity:
Show the children a real leaf. Point out the veins on the leaf.
Have them touch the leaf so they can feel the veins.
Have them put glue on
their leaves to make veins. When the glue is dry, have them touch
the veins they created on their leaf.
Activity name:
Paint with Pumpkins
Materials needed:
Orange and green paint
White paper
Paper plate
Small pumpkins (the ones with the biggest ridges work
best--be sure they still have stems)
Preparation:
Put some paint onto a paper plate.
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children hold the stem of the pumpkin and then roll it in the
paint. Then have them roll it onto their piece of paper.
Have them keep applying
paint and rolling randomly on their paper as much as they desire.
Activity name:
Hand Leaves
Materials needed:
Red, orange, yellow, and/or brown
construction paper
Crayons
Scissors
Preparation:
Trace a child's hands (fingers and
thumbs together) onto a piece of construction paper. Cut out the hands.
When cutting out the bottom of the palm area, cut to create a stem or glue
a paper one on later.
Carrying out the
activity:
Have the children color their leaves by
adding veins or any other way they might choose.
Activity name:
Cornmeal Leaves
Materials needed:
Red, orange, yellow, and/or brown
construction paper
Scissors
Cornmeal
Red, yellow, and green food color
Plastic or Styrofoam bowls
Plastic spoon
White school glue
Preparation:
Step 1 ~
Cut out simple leaf shapes from the
construction paper.
Step 2~
Put some cornmeal into a bowl and add a few drops of red food coloring.
Use the back of a spoon to push and mix the food coloring into the
cornmeal. This can be a time consuming
process, but it's well worth the time. Continue adding small
amounts of food color until the mixture obtains the color you desire. The
mixture will not be a true color. Some of the cornmeal color will show
through, which adds to the effect. Repeat this process in additional
bowls to create the yellow and green colored cornmeal.
Carrying out the
activity:
Put glue on each leaf forming a veining
pattern--be sure not to put it on too thick. If the children are old
enough, they can do this part themselves. Have the children sprinkle small
amounts of the colored cornmeal onto the glue. When all of the glue areas
have been covered with the colored cornmeal, carefully tip the leaf and
shake off the excess. Allow the leaves to dry completely. When dry, have
the children feel the veins on their leaves.
