Chubbie Cubbie's Earth Day Activities

Activity name:
Paper Tube Bracelets - A Recycling Activity

Materials needed:
Toilet tissue or paper towel tube
Scissors
Crayons, paint, and/or markers
Embellishments such as glitter or stickers

Preparation:
Cut about a 1" piece from the end of a tube.  Cut through one side so that the tube can be pulled open to fit over a child's wrist.

Carrying out the activity:
Have the child color the outside of their tube bracelet and decorate it with any embellishments they desire.

Activity name:
Coffee Filter Globes

Materials needed:
Coffee filter
Blue & green food color
Pipettes or plastic droppers
Water
2 plastic or Styrofoam cups

Preparation:
Add some green food color to one cup of water and some blue to the other cup of water.  Flatten the coffee filter.  Spread newspaper over your workspace.

Carrying out the activity:
Use a pipette or dropper to place blue and green food colored water in different areas of the filter.  Be sure to have the children do it in small amounts.  Too much and you'll end up with a blue-green coffee filter.

When they are done, allow to dry.  You'll have green land and blue water.

Activity name:
Good Clean Fun

Materials needed:
Trash bags (5)
Rubber or latex gloves
Permanent marker

Preparation:
Label the bags:
Paper
Plastic
Glass
Metal
Trash

Carrying out the activity:
Take the children out for a day of cleaning.  Clean up a park, your yard, a playground, or more.

Take before and after pictures so they can see what a great job they did.  Did they find items that can be recycled?  Can they count the items?

Be sure to monitor the children carefully so they don't pick up sharp objects or broken glass.
